We've been experiencing so much change and rapid growth this year so we'll be introducing you to our amazing team members in a monthly series! 🖤
Meet Miyo (they/she), EiC’s Training Associate! They were born and partially raised in Hilo, Hawaiʻi 🏝 and at age 13, they moved to the Bay Area in California. This experience allowed them to gain a nuanced perspective on how gender, mental health, culture, race, and economics play a role in adolescent identity-making. Miyo still resides in the Bay Area, where they completed their doctoral dissertation on LGBTQ+ millennial identity-making and activism. In their free time, Miyo enjoys finding ways to create and have fun at the expense of no one.

Lead. Follow. Or, get out of the way. After the Buffalo, NY massacre this past weekend, these words and tools for racial equity and justice published by our President Kerrien Suarez in 2020 are still so needed.
“By centering the voices, lived expertise, healing practices, leadership and power of Indigenous and Black people, we make progress toward the deep equity and liberation that this moment in history, and colonialism’s legacy of state-sanctioned savagery and white supremacy, requires.”

What is a microaggression? 🤔
The everyday verbal, nonverbal, and environmental slights, snubs, or insults, whether intentional or unintentional, which communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative messages to target persons based solely upon their marginalized group membership.
In getting started with race equity work in your organization, one of the first steps should be establishing a shared vocabulary of key foundational concepts! This may not seem important, but it’s key in getting everyone on the same page and coming up with shared solutions.
To help you get started on shared language, check out our Awake to Woke to Work publication: equityinthecenter.org/aww (link in profile)

Learn More About Us
We envision a future where nonprofit and philanthropic organizations are characterized by a Race Equity Culture, meaning they implement and advance race equity internally while advocating for and centering it in work externally.
To achieve that future, we challenge colleagues to adopt specific tactics on the levels at which racism operates.
